The evening brought together over 300 guests from livery companies and across the wider meat industry. The Aberdeen delegation was honoured to receive a special mention for making the journey south. This recognition reflects the strong and growing relationship between the Worshipful Company of Butchers and the Aberdeen Fleshers.
Guildhall provided a striking setting for the occasion, with its impressive Gothic architecture and rich history. The atmosphere throughout the evening was warm and welcoming, with a strong sense of fellowship and purpose. Guests enjoyed excellent food, engaging entertainment, and the opportunity to support an important fundraising initiative.
The Worshipful Company of Butchers is one of London’s oldest livery companies, with a history spanning more than 1,000 years. It has long played a central role in the city’s meat trade, promoting high standards, supporting education, and preserving traditional skills.
A particular highlight of the visit was a private tour of Smithfield Market at 5:00am, led by Master Gwyn Howells and a market representative. Smithfield has operated in various forms since around 1174 and is now one of Europe’s leading wholesale meat markets. This early visit offered a rare chance to see the market in full operation and to better understand its scale, history, and importance.
The delegation also visited Butchers’ Hall, a modern building with deep historical significance. Inside are artefacts that reflect the long history of the trade. The warm welcome extended throughout the visit was greatly appreciated.
Following the Worshipful Company of Butchers’ visit to Aberdeen during the London Livery Weekend last year, this return visit has further strengthened ties between the two organisations. The Aberdeen Fleshers Incorporation and the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen look forward to continuing this relationship, built on shared heritage, mutual respect, and support for the future of the craft.
This was a memorable and valuable visit, set against a historic backdrop. The Aberdeen Fleshers extend their sincere thanks to Master Gwyn Howells and the Worshipful Company of Butchers for their generous hospitality.
