On 14th March 2016, Georgette Cobban of Home-Start Aberdeen was presented with cheque by Norman Hutchison, Deacon of the Aberdeen Baker Incorporation. Home-Start Aberdeen provides families with emotional and practical support in their own home environment. Families – who are mainly referred to Home-Start via health visitors and social workers – may be facing a variety of challenges. These include ill health, disability, domestic violence or substance misuse.

Fleshers member goes that extra mile for charity

An Aberdeen Fleshers member is going the extra mile to raise vital funds for Scotland’s Health Charity, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS), a charity which needs to raise £8 million each year to fund its programme of support for people living with chest, heart and stroke illness. The charity provides care, information and support when it’s needed most – helping people to regain their independence. They also fund vital research into these illnesses and offer confidential advice and information.

Deacon Ian MacIntosh, who is from Torphins is taking part in this year’s Virgin London Marathon is already going all out with fundraising with an incredible £2,500 raised as a result of taking part in the Great Scottish Run Half Marathon, a fund raising event and from the generosity of Trinity Hall. …

Charity Grand Slam!

Local charities are better off thanks to the Aberdeen Shoemakers Incorporation.

The fund raising dinner held on 9th May 2015 at Trinity Hall was a roaring success with a warm up act from former policeman, rugby-nut and well-kent after dinner speaker Gordon Bradley, who was full of good humour and appropriate insults for former colleagues in the emergency services who were present. Gordon entertained the audience providing a great platform for the main speaker Iwan Tukalo, a member of the Scottish Rugby Grand Slam winning team in 1990. Iwan, who won 237 caps for his country, provided a fascinating insight into the Grand Slam season taking questions and answers from the audience.

Gordon Bradley then acted as auctioneer where numerous sports and other items were available.

The evening ended with a raffle after which the Shoemakers were able to announce that some £2,500 will be donated to their nominated charities. The beneficiaries were North East Sensory Services, The Vine Trust and the Incorporated Trades own charity account overseen by Dr Guilds Managers. …

Kilometres or miles? Which is longer?

I have now completed two UK “End to End” 14 day cycles rides. My first, in May 2013, was Lands End to John O’Groats, which for me, was a very daunting prospect as I had never tackled such a cycling challenge and this combined with the fact that I was beyond retirement age, it was a physical challenge that somewhat concerned my family. I had carefully selected Peak Tours, a cycle tour specialist from web research of the range of organisers of cycling holidays, believing that they would provide the most supportive arrangements and so enable me to achieve my objective of safely completing the trip. Such was my enjoyment of the experience that I put my name down for a place on Peak Tours’ Dover to Cape Wrath challenge, again over 14 days. This I completed in August 2014.

It is said that “there is no fool like an old fool”, and my actions after completing Dover to Cape Wrath, adds considerable credence to that saying because, I have once again put my name down for another 14 day cycle ride, again organised by Peak Tours – this time it will be from the English Channel to the Mediterranean or more precisely, Caen to Nice. This will be done in May 2015.

“Coats for Kids” given a boost by Aberdeen Fleshers

As hard as it is to believe, hundreds of local children will be going to school without suitable warm clothing this winter. No hat, no scarf, no boots, no winter coat. Many families in our area have to choose between buying food, heating their home and buying essential clothing. Shocking isn’t it?

Therefore, during their recent Annual Dinner Dance, the Aberdeen Fleshers Incorporation chose to support Northsound Radios “Cash for Kids”, which has launched an appeal for “Coats for Kids“, with the aim of raising £30,000 to ensure that no child in our area goes without the most basic of winter clothing.

Members and guests alike donated generously so Deacon Ian A MacIntosh met with Cash for Kids representative Emma Kemp to hand over their donation. If you feel you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please visit Cash for Kids.

Dover to Cape Wrath

When I completed the challenge of cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats last year, I felt that it was something I wouldn’t need to do again…….and then I saw that an alternative “end to end” was being established, to cycle from Dover to Cape Wrath…..and so I was hooked and duly booked to tackle this one in August 2014. Having had some very cold and wet weather last year on the ride in May, I thought that I could depend on better weather in August. The route was around the same distance at 1050 miles and this time I would be travelling to and through countryside and towns I did not know well. The route, defined by our planned overnight stops, was Dover, Brentwood, The Hemingfords, Newark, Wortley, Gargrave, Penrith, Thornhill, Brodick, Craignure, Mallaig, Kinlochewe, Ullapool, Durness and finally to Cape Wrath. That route includes the use of seven ferries and so some of our days we had the additional pressure of requiring us to make ferry departure times. The final known challenge was that the route required significant hill climbs as we crossed the Pennines, made our way through the Yorkshire Dales and then wound our way north up the west coast of Scotland – some 66,000ft of ascent in all. …

Fleshers support “Cash for Kids”

Following their annual Dinner Dance, Boxmaster Ian MacIntosh of the Aberdeen Fleshers Incorporation handed over their generous donation to Emma Kemp, the representative of Northsound Radios “Cash for Kids“, a charity dedicated to helping disabled and disadvantaged children and young people under 18 throughout the Grampian area, with mental, physical or sensory disabilities, behavioural or psychological disorders, living in poverty or situations of deprivation, or suffering through distress, abuse or neglect.

It’s time to look out the bicycle clips again!

Ex Deacon Convener Graeme Nicol’s granddaughter Morven has the cystic fibrosis condition, which is an inherited disease caused by a faulty gene. This gene controls the movement of salt and water in and out of the body’s cells, so the lungs and digestive system become clogged with mucus, making it hard to breathe and digest food. More than 2.5 million people in the UK carry the faulty gene, around one in 25 of the population. There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis but many treatments are available to manage it, including physiotherapy, exercise, medication and nutrition. Each week five babies are born with cystic fibrosis.
The family are fortunate that Morven was diagnosed at birth and so has had the benefit of the care and guidance of the specialists at ARI and the ongoing investment in research made by The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and keeps well. But there is no cure for this life limiting condition and so there is a need to keep research funding going.
Since Morven’s birth, the family have been active fund raisers for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Graeme’s contribution this year will be to cycle from Dover to Cape Wrath, a full traverse of the United Kingdom from SE to NW, a distance of 1000 road miles. The route will see him head from Dover into Essex and onwards through Cambridge, Lincoln, York and then over to Carlisle. The midpoint day will see him cross the border aiming for Sanquhar. …

“Tonights the night” for charity fundraising

On Saturday evening, members and guests of the Incorporated Trades attended a charity evening and were entertained by Mr Martin Ross, who performed a range of songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

After a break for a finger buffet the entertainment continued with a two hour performance of Rod Stewart’s greatest hits by ‘tribute artist’ Bob Wyper.

The evening was a great success, with the prize draw raising cash for local charities. The prize of a weekend break for two in a luxury hotel in Perthshire was won by a guest of the Shoemakers Incorporation.
